Itinerary
Day 1: Phnom Penh - Arrival
Morning:
Welcome to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. Once hailed as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’, Phnom Penh has endured many ups and downs. Much of its former grace was destroyed by war and genocide in the 1970s. Yet this capital city has persevered into the 21st century with optimism and bravery. You will be enchanted by its sacred Khmer architectures, the presence of saffron-robed monks, and the nostalgic French colonial charm, all infused with a youthful, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Upon arrival, our friendly driver and guide will warmly welcome and take you to your hotel.
Afternoon:
Once settling in, you will start a mini exploration around the city centre. First, we’ll visit the Victory Monument, a towering symbol of Cambodia’s independence and resilience. From there, we’ll head to the Royal Palace, a stunning complex of buildings that has been the official residence of the Cambodian royal family since the 1860s. Inside the palace grounds, we’ll visit the Silver Pagoda, a magnificent temple with a floor made entirely of silver tiles. Here, you’ll see some of the most precious treasures of the Cambodian monarchy, including a solid gold Buddha weighing a whopping 90 kilograms! Afterwards, you’ll have the rest of the day to explore the city or simply relax at your leisure.
Overnight in Phnom Penh
Day 2: Phnom Penh - Phnom Tamao Rescue Center
Morning:
Leave behind the vibrant atmosphere of Phnom Penh with a visit to the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center in Takeo Province. This experience offers an in-depth look into the vital work of the Wildlife Alliance team, dedicated to protecting Cambodia’s wildlife from poaching, trafficking, and cruelty. Start your day with an exciting forest walk alongside elephants. You’ll have the chance to feed these majestic creatures and learn about their lives. Ever wondered how elephants paint? You’ll able to get a unique t-shirt featuring an elephant-designed artwork, made with their trunks! After your elephant encounter, explore the tiger enclosures and other fascinating wildlife. A special highlight is a visit to the rehab section, typically off-limits to visitors, where you might help feed a young jackal or leopard cat, or play with playful baby macaques.
Afternoon:
Continue your exploration with visits to the rare hairy-nosed otter compound and the water birds and deer section. This experience is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts and conservation supporters. After a full day of adventure, you can enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure – explore the city or simply relax.
Overnight in Phnom Penh
Day 3: Kratie
Morning:
Wake up early today because we are heading to Kratie, a charming town on the banks of the mighty Mekong River. As we traverse the scenic route for about 5 hours, we will pause at the renowned district of Skuon, famously known as ‘Spiderville.’ Here, you will have the adventurous opportunity to sample a local delicacy – deep-fried tarantulas, if you’re feeling daring. But no need to worry; there will be an assortment of other tasty snacks available for you to enjoy.
Afternoon:
As you continue on your journey, marvel at the stunning countryside scenery, lush rice paddies, and charming rural villages. Upon arrival in Kratie, you’ll notice that life here, as in many Cambodian towns, centers around the riverfront. The area is adorned with charming, albeit slightly worn, French colonial buildings clustered around the port. As evening falls, the riverfront lights up with some of the most breathtaking Mekong sunsets you’ll ever see.
Overnight in Kratie
Day 4: Kratie - River dolphins watching
Morning:
We’ll start our day by visiting Prek Kampi to take a boat ride and try to spot the rare Mekong River Dolphins, also known as Mekong Irrawaddy Dolphins. Did you know these dolphins are found only in Asian coastal regions? There are fewer than 100 dolphins in Kratie, and local initiatives work tirelessly to protect them. They are hard to spot since they mostly stay submerged, surfacing for only a few seconds to breathe. That’s why: always keep your camera ready and your eyes peeled for the playful dolphins. If you don’t see one, don’t be disheartened; the daily life of locals along the riverbanks is equally impressive and worth capturing.
Afternoon:
We’ll start our journey with a visit to a Bunong minority village, where you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in their rich traditions and customs. The villagers might invite you to taste their homemade rice wine and offer a glimpse into their renowned hospitality. Next, we’ll head to the breathtaking Bou Sraa Falls, one of Cambodia’s most iconic natural wonders. The falls are divided into two stunning stages: the upper cascade, towering 10 meters high and spanning 15 meters wide, and the lower cascade, which reaches an impressive 20 meters in height and 20 meters in width. The area is dotted with refreshing freshwater pools, perfect for a cool dip especially during the hot summer months. Our final destination for the day will be Mondulkiri, Cambodia’s largest and most sparsely populated province. After we check into our hotel, you’ll have the remainder of the day to unwind and soak in the tranquil beauty of this enchanting province.
Overnight in Mondulkiri
Day 5: Mondulkiri - Elephant Sanctuary
Morning:
Despite the alarming rate at which Cambodia is losing its forests, Mondulkiri is home to several large wildlife sanctuaries, preserving both its natural inhabitants and the crucial “lungs” of nature. Today, we’ll visit the Mondulkiri Project, a sanctuary where you can get up close and personal with one of the planet’s most incredible creatures: elephants! These elephants, previously captive and saved from logging or riding, are now habituated to humans. Have you ever wondered what it feels like to walk alongside an elephant in a protected forest? You’ll have the opportunity to feed them and create a special bond. Take a break in a jungle lodge, swaying on a hammock, surrounded by the serene beauty of the forest.
Afternoon:
We’ll take a refreshing walk to a stunning waterfall where we can swim and have fun washing the elephants—a one-of-a-kind experience you’ll never forget! Unlike commercial places that exploit elephants for profit, here you will truly feel the happiness of these gentle giants enjoying their freedom. Afterwards, saying goodbye to the elephants, we’ll head back to the center of Mondulkiri.
Overnight in Mondulkiri
Day 6: Mondulkiri - Jahoo Gibbon Camp
Morning:
Prepare for an adrenaline-pumping adventure as we drive towards the awe-inspiring Keo Seima or Seima Protected Forest, a sprawling 2,000 square kilometers of untouched wilderness. Did you know that this forest is home to the Bunong ethnic minority, one of Cambodia’s most impoverished communities? Our destination is Jahoo Gibbon Camp, nestled in the Andong Kraloeng community site. This nature-based tourist spot provides vital financial support to both the local community and wildlife. After settling in, we’ll embark on a short trek through the forest, where you’ll have the chance to spot a variety of rare and exotic bird species, such as the striking peacock pheasants and the majestic giant hornbills. With our experienced local guides, you’ll gain insight into the fascinating flora and fauna of this unique ecosystem.
Afternoon:
After a full day of exploration, unwind at our cozy tented accommodation, designed with local, renewable materials and inspired by traditional Bunong architecture. Refresh with a forest shower and enjoy a delicious, home-cooked dinner before settling into your comfortable room for the night.
Overnight in Mondulkiri
Day 7: Mondulkiri – Jahoo Gibbon Camp
Morning:
Begin your day with the dawn chorus and embark on a wildlife spotting adventure in the Seima Protected Forest. Here, you’ll have the rare opportunity to see critically endangered gibbons, the vibrant black-shanked doucs, and other elusive species. An expert guide from the WCS Bunong Gibbon Researchers team will accompany you on a short but stealthy trek close to the camp. Be alert and quiet to catch glimpses of these fascinating primates as they move through their forest home. By the time the sun is fully up, it will be time to say goodbye to your welcoming hosts at Jahoo Gibbon Camp. We’ll set off on a scenic drive to Kampong Thom, a historic city located about six hours away.
Afternoon:
Upon arrival in Kampong Thom, you can spend the rest of your day enjoying the laid-back charm of the city and preparing for the next leg of your journey.
Overnight in Kampong Thom
Day 8: Siem Reap
Morning:
Our journey continues with a 4-hour drive from Kampong Thom to Siem Reap. On the way, we’ll visit the incredible pre-Angkorian capital of Isanapura, now known as Prasat Sambor Prei Kuk. Did you know this was the first major temple city in Southeast Asia? This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to peaceful brick temples that stand in charming contrast to the more famous temples at Angkor. You’ll explore stunning main temples like Prasat Tao, adorned with intricately carved lions, and Prasat Sambor, with its ancient, crumbling sanctuaries.
Afternoon:
Upon arriving in Siem Reap, you’ll have some time to rest and refresh before dining at Haven, a heartwarming restaurant in the town’s center. Haven offers delicious meals and provides training and employment opportunities for disadvantaged young people, making your experience even more meaningful. Afterwards, the rest of the day is yours to explore Siem Reap at your leisure. Unlike the bustling capital city of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap offers a peaceful atmosphere, preserving the sacred vibe of the nearby Angkor Complex.
Overnight in Siem Reap
Day 9: Siem Reap - Zipline adventure
Morning:
We will take you to one of the newest and most thrilling attractions in Siem Reap, the Angkor Zipline. This exhilarating experience is the perfect way to appreciate the UNESCO World Heritage designated Angkor Archaeological Park. Not only will you be soaring through the air and having a blast, but you’ll also get to marvel at the stunning natural surroundings teeming with exotic wildlife across the 6-hectare site. The adventure includes 10 exhilarating zip lines connecting 21 platforms high above the forest floor. To top it all off, your zip line journey ends with a heart-pounding 50 ft abseil finish.
Afternoon:
Return to the centre of Siem Reap and enjoy the city at your own pace. The magnificent architecture of the Angkor period often steals the spotlight, causing many to overlook Cambodia’s culinary heritage. Tonight, treat yourself to the distinct flavors of Cambodian food. Savor the national steamed fish curry ‘Amok’, flavorful meat skewers, or freshly mixed green mango salad ‘Nhoam Svay Kchai’.
Overnight in Siem Reap
Day 10: Siem Reap - Angkor Wat
Morning:
Our day begins with a visit to Angkor Thom, a fortified city that houses iconic sites like the Terrace of Elephants, the Royal Enclosure, and the Temple of Bayon, known for its giant smiling Buddha faces. We’ll explore the dense tree canopy to discover the moss-covered ruins of Ta Prohm, a Buddhist temple made mainstream by the film ‘Tomb Raider’. Wander through its towers, courtyards, and corridors to find out intricate stone reliefs that are hidden by ancient giant roots and lush foliage.
Afternoon:
We’ll pass by stone faces watching over us at South Gate of Angkor Thom to reach Cambodia’s national icon and Khmer people’s pride, Angkor Wat. Do you know that this UNESCO-listed wonder stands as the world’s largest temple monument? Explore further to admire intricately carved bas reliefs depicting the king in battle and graceful Apsara dancers. But the best is saved for last. We’ll head to the Big Top to watch the stunning Phare Cambodian Circus. This incredible performance blends traditional Cambodian dance with modern entertainment, presented by talented circus artists who come from underprivileged backgrounds. Phare has transformed their lives, giving them a chance for a brighter future.
