AYUBOWAN! Welcome to Sri Lanka, The Pearl of the Indian Ocean. Upon arrival at the airport, you will be greeted by your guide and transferred directly to Negombo, a serene coastal town nestled right next to the bustling capital, Colombo. After checking into your hotel, the day ahead is all yours to soak in the charm of Negombo, especially the tranquil Negombo lagoon.

Morning:
Wake up early for a walk down to Negombo Fish Market as local fishermen return from sea in traditional wooden outrigger canoes (oruwa). Watch workers sort the morning catch and lay fish out on woven mats along the shore to dry in the sun. Return to your hotel for breakfast.

Afternoon:
Embark on a wildlife adventure at Minneriya National Park, renowned for their rich biodiversity and captivating safaris. Minneriya National Park is famed for hosting Asia’s largest gathering of elephants, alongside endemic species like the purple-faced langur and toque macaque. Encounter Sri Lankan sambar deer, axis deer, and occasional sightings of the elusive leopard and sloth bear. The park’s reservoir attracts a variety of water birds, including the lesser adjutant and painted stork. Conclude your day at a comfortable hotel, enjoying relaxation at your leisure.

Morning:
Start early to climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress (‘The Lion Rock’), a 200-meter granite monolith transformed into a royal palace by King Kashyapa in the 5th century. Ascend the spiral staircase to view ancient cave frescoes of celestial maidens, pass the polished beeswax ‘Mirror Wall’, and step between two giant carved stone lion paws to reach the summit palace ruins.

Afternoon:
Visit Hiriwadunna village for an authentic look at rural life. Ride a traditional wooden bullock cart through vegetable fields, cross a lily-covered reservoir on a catamaran boat, and enjoy a home-cooked village lunch served on banana leaves with clay-pot rice, lotus root, and fresh coconut sambol. Afterward, explore Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s 11th-century capital, marveling at the colossal stone-carved Buddha statues of Gal Vihara.

Check out and visit Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to the 1st century BC. Walk through five massive natural granite caves housing 153 gold-covered Buddha statues and intricate ceiling murals painted with natural plant dyes.

Afternoon:
Drive south toward Kandy, stopping at a spice garden in Matale. Walk through lush gardens with a local specialist to see how cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, and true Ceylon cinnamon grow in their natural soil. Arrive in Kandy, Sri Lanka’s sacred hill capital. In the evening, watch an energetic performance of traditional Kandyan dances, complete with rhythmic drumming, elaborate silver costumes, and fire-walking rites.

Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) inside Kandy’s historic royal palace complex. Afternoon:
Drive up into the cool, misty mountains of Nuwara Eliya (‘Little England’), stopping to admire the cascading Ramboda Waterfalls. Tour a working Ceylon tea estate, where tea bushes were first planted by Scotsman James Taylor in 1867. Walk through the fields alongside tea pluckers, observe the traditional drying and rolling machinery inside the factory, and sample a cup of fresh, high-grown Ceylon black tea.
