Pre-holiday: Why November to early December is the sweet spot to visit Asia?

⏱️15 Mins Read

November to early December can be one of the best times to travel around Asia. In much of mainland Southeast Asia, the rainy season is easing, temperatures become more comfortable, and popular places have not yet reached the Christmas and New Year rush.

The key is knowing where this window actually works. Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and parts of South Asia can offer very different conditions at the same time, while destinations such as Bali may be entering a wetter period. This guide breaks down where to go, what the weather is really like, and why traveling before the holidays can make a noticeable difference to your trip.

Why travel to Asia before the holiday rush?

The real appeal of November to early December is not simply “fewer tourists.” In much of mainland Southeast Asia, this is when the weather starts becoming more comfortable, while the concentrated Christmas and New Year travel rush has not fully arrived.

You get the beginning of the good-weather season

There is no single weather pattern for all of Asia, but November marks an important seasonal shift across several mainland Southeast Asian destinations. Thailand enters its cool season, while Laos and Cambodia move into their dry periods; in northern Vietnam, November is typically cool and dry, with Hanoi averaging around 18–25°C. This makes November particularly the best for trips that involve a lot of time outdoors.

But good weather does not always mean low season. Cambodia, for example, considers November to January part of its peak tourist season, while Laos also enters one of its busiest periods as the cool, dry season begins.

You can get ahead of the Christmas and New Year rush

There is also something nice about arriving before everyone starts traveling for the holidays. By early December, the weather in many destinations is already looking good, but the biggest wave of Christmas and New Year travel has not yet arrived. That gives you a little more breathing room when choosing hotels, flights, tours, and activities.

You can still enjoy the festive atmosphere

Traveling before Christmas does not mean missing out on the fun part of the holiday season. By early December, you can already see Christmas decorations appearing in major cities, shopping areas and hotels. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, for example, start getting into the Christmas mood with decorations, events and activities.

And if you travel in November, you may catch something completely different. Loi Krathong in Thailand, for example, brings lanterns, illuminated temples and riverside celebrations in places such as Bangkok, Ayutthaya and Sukhothai.

In short, November to early December gives you a comfortable middle ground: the weather is improving, the holiday mood is starting to appear, and you still have some distance from the busiest Christmas and New Year travel dates.

Is November to early December the good time for all of Asia?

Not quite. This is where it helps to look beyond the calendar and check what is actually happening in each region.

If you want… Look at… Why November–early December can work

Southeast Asia – generally the strongest fit

This is where the November to early December window makes the most sense.

  • Thailand enters its cool season in November, as the Andaman coast is coming out of the monsoon period at this time.
  • Cambodia also moves into its cool, dry season from November, with temperatures around 17–27°C.
  • Vietnam is a little more complicated: Northern Vietnam enters a cooler, drier period from around October, while the Mekong Delta becomes a stronger option from November onward. Southern Vietnam’s main dry season starts in December.

The useful takeaway: you can build a multi-country trip around this period, but don’t treat “Southeast Asia in November” as one weather forecast. Pair destinations that are entering their favorable season instead of simply following a country list.

South Asia – destination matters

South Asia doesn’t have one simple November-to-December weather pattern.

  • In India, conditions vary dramatically by region: northern areas can become cooler while parts of southern India remain warmer.
  • Sri Lanka is similarly seasonal, with conditions differing between its southwest and northeast coasts.
  • The Maldives is a different case again, with November marking the transition toward its drier period rather than the same cool-season pattern found farther north.

The planning trick is simple: choose the main experience first – trekking, wildlife, sightseeing or beaches – then check the seasonal conditions for the specific region you’re visiting.

East Asia – a different seasonal story

East Asia is even less suited to a blanket “pre-holiday sweet spot.”

By November, destinations such as Japan, South Korea and northern China are moving firmly into autumn or winter conditions. That can be excellent if you are looking for autumn foliage, crisp city weather or early winter experiences, but it is a very different kind of trip from escaping to a warm Southeast Asian beach.

This is why the phrase “best time to visit Asia” can be misleading. The same November date can mean tropical beach weather in southern Thailand and much colder conditions in northern East Asia.

Where should you go in November to early December?

For cool weather and outdoor adventures: Northern Vietnam

Northern Vietnam is one of the most interesting choices for this window if you want to spend your holiday outside rather than beside a hotel pool.

Hanoi is typically cool and relatively dry from September to December, with temperatures around 18–25°C. But the bigger opportunity is also beyond Hanoi. November is a comfortable time to combine the capital with northern mountain destinations such as Ha Giang, Sapa, or Ha Long Bay, when cooler temperatures make long days of sightseeing and outdoor activities much easier.

Best activities to consider: Road trips, trekking, mountain scenery, local culture, photography.

For beaches and island trips: Southern Thailand

If your idea of a pre-holiday escape is warm water, islands and long days outside, southern Thailand deserves a closer look. November is an important transition month. The Andaman coast, including destinations around Krabi, is coming out of the monsoon season, while December moves further into Thailand’s cooler season.

Best activities to consider: Good for: Beaches, island hopping, snorkeling, enjoy dinner cruise.

For temples and comfortable sightseeing: Cambodia

Cambodia is a strong option if your ideal holiday involves temples in the morning, local food in the afternoon and exploring without fighting intense heat. The country’s dry season begins around October and continues through the cooler months. November to January is among the more comfortable periods for visiting major cultural sites, including Angkor.

There is an important trade-off, though: good weather also brings more travelers. November to January is peak tourist season in Cambodia, so this is not the place to expect empty temples or rock-bottom prices simply because you are traveling before Christmas.

For slow travel and culture: Laos

Laos is a particularly good match for travelers who want their holiday to slow down rather than pack every day with activities.

The official dry season runs from October to April, while November to January is especially attractive for exploring the Mekong and northern areas. Cooler temperatures also make walking around Luang Prabang, visiting temples and spending time in rural areas more comfortable.

What to pack for Asia in November and early December

A trip through northern Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia can involve cool mornings, warm afternoons, rain showers and air-conditioned transport in the same itinerary. So it’s worthwhile to pack essentials around the region you’re actually visiting.

If you’re heading to mainland Southeast Asia

  • Lightweight T-shirts and breathable tops
  • Long trousers or lightweight hiking pants
  • Shorts or skirts for warmer areas
  • A thin long-sleeve shirt or light jacket
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals
  • Light rain jacket or compact poncho
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • A small daypack for daily sightseeing
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Basic medications and personal toiletries

Don’t forget the rain

November and early December can be a transition period, so packing for completely dry weather can backfire. A compact rain jacket or poncho can be a practical choice, especially if you are moving between several destinations.

FAQs about visiting Asia before winter holidays

Is November a good month to visit Asia?

Yes, but November is much better suited to some parts of Asia than others. For mainland Southeast Asia, November is an important seasonal transition. Thailand enters its cooler season, Cambodia moves into its cooler and drier period, and parts of Vietnam become more favorable for travel. Northern Vietnam is cooler and drier, while southern destinations are moving toward their dry season.

The catch is that “Asia” is too broad to give one weather answer. Japan and South Korea are heading into colder conditions, while parts of Indonesia are moving into their wet season.

Is early December better than November for traveling in Asia?

Not universally. Early December is often a continuation of November’s favorable conditions, but it comes with a gradual increase in holiday demand.

November can offer a little more breathing room, particularly before international Christmas travel starts building. Early December can bring more settled conditions to some destinations and the beginning of the festive atmosphere in major cities.

Is December more expensive than November in Asia?

It can be, especially toward Christmas and New Year. Early December isn’t necessarily dramatically more expensive than November. The bigger change usually comes as Christmas approaches, when more people are traveling at the same time.

Hotels in popular beach destinations can fill up, flights can become more expensive, and popular tours may have fewer spaces available.

Which Asian countries have the best weather in November?

If you’re looking for comfortable weather for a holiday, mainland Southeast Asia is one of the first places to look. Thailand, Laos and Cambodia are moving into their cooler, drier period, while different parts of Vietnam are becoming more or less suitable depending on where you go.

Is Bali worth visiting in November or early December?

Yes, but do not put your expectations high up. November and early December are around the start of Bali’s wetter season, so you’re more likely to see tropical showers than you would during the dry season.

That doesn’t mean it will rain all day. You can still have plenty of sunshine and enjoy Bali’s beaches, restaurants, temples, rice terraces and wellness experiences. The main difference is that you should leave a little flexibility in your plans.

What is the best Asian destination for a pre-Christmas trip?

There isn’t one answer – it depends on the kind of holiday you want.

  • Want beaches? Look at Vietnam and Thailand and other destinations entering their drier season.
  • Want culture and sightseeing? Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam offer plenty to explore in comfortable weather.
  • Want adventure? Mainland Southeast Asia works well for combining outdoor activities, road trips and cultural stops.
  • Want a city break? Cities such as Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Singapore start feeling more festive as December approaches.
