Day 1: Siem Reap - Arrival

Welcome to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Three decades ago, Siem Reap was a small, dusty provincial gateway to one of the most remarkable Angkor creations on earth. The locals endured the rule of the Khmer Rouge stronghold in the 1970s, facing shocking war crimes. Only the most adventurous travelers visited Cambodia during decades of conflict and political turmoil. Until the early 90s, when peace finally descended on Cambodia, Siem Reap gradually transformed into a modern and safe tourism spot.

Upon arrival, our friendly guide and driver will warmly welcome and take you to your hotel. After some time to relax and settle in your hotel, get ready for a fun Tuk Tuk ride around the city, a perfect way to explore the local life. As evening falls, let the dinner be your official welcome, as we escort you to a local restaurant for a mesmerizing Apsara Dance Show. This traditional performance, rich in culture and history, will leave you spellbound.

Day 2: Siem Reap – Angkor Wat

Morning:
Our day begins with a visit to Angkor Thom, a fortified city that houses iconic sites like the Terrace of Elephants, the Royal Enclosure, and the Temple of Bayon, known for its giant smiling Buddha faces. We’ll explore the dense tree canopy to discover the moss-covered ruins of Ta Prohm, a Buddhist temple made mainstream by the film ‘Tomb Raider’. Wander through its towers, courtyards, and corridors to find out intricate stone reliefs that are hidden by ancient giant roots and lush foliage.

Afternoon:
We’ll pass by stone faces watching over us at South Gate of Angkor Thom to reach Cambodia’s national icon and Khmer people’s pride, Angkor Wat. Do you know that this UNESCO-listed wonder stands as the world’s largest temple monument? The sacred site holds significant cultural importance in Hindu mythology, symbolizing the peaks of Mount Meru, the Gods’ dwelling. Explore further to admire intricately carved bas reliefs depicting the king in battle and graceful Apsara dancers.

Day 3: Siem Reap – Banteay Srei

Morning:
We’ll start our journey by heading to the outskirts of Siem Reap. Our first destination is the picturesque Preah Dak village, offering a glimpse into the local country life. Continue to the terracotta-hued walls of Banteay Srei, also known as the “Citadel of Women,” where you’ll be mesmerized by intricate 10th-century carvings depicting female characters. Then, we’ll visit the impressive Banteay Samre, constructed during the same period as Angkor Wat and renowned as one of the finest and most intact Khmer monuments.

Afternoon:
For the rest of the day, we’ll be exploring the Roluos Group, which is the oldest temple site in Siem Reap and served as the first capital of the ancient Angkor Empire, known as Hariharalaya. This group consists of four main temples: Preah Ko, Lolei, Bakong, and Prasat Prei Monti, all dating back to the late 9th century. These temples are invaluable evidence of the early stages of Khmer civilization.

Day 4: Battambang - Bamboo train route

Morning:
We will have a 3-hour journey to Battambang, known for its laid-back atmosphere compared to the livelier hot spots. Upon arrival, we’ll first explore the captivating complex of Wat Ek Phnom. This enchanting temple, dating back to the 11th century, features partially collapsed structures surrounded by remnants of a laterite wall and an ancient reservoir.

Afternoon:
Our day continues with a visit to Wat Slaket, a serene monastery and pagoda situated along the scenic Sangker River. Then, immerse yourself in the local culture at a nearby market, where you can observe the traditional process of making Prahoc, a Cambodian fish paste. Finally, you’ll experience a unique ride on the bamboo train, locally known as ‘norry’. The locals have ingeniously constructed a train consisting of nothing more than a bamboo platform powered by motors. And it can be set up or taken down in just a few minutes! Along the train route, you’ll pass by colonial bridges, picturesque countryside, and lush jungle landscapes.

Day 5: Battambang - Phnom Sampeou

Morning:
We’ll head out to the outskirts of Battambang for a thrilling discovery, starting with Phnom Banan. Climb 358 laterite steps to reach the top, where you’ll be greeted by five sandstone towers overlooking the Sangker River, surrounded by sugar palm trees, rice fields, and charming villages.

Afternoon:
Continue our journey by exploring Phnom Sampeou. As you ascend about halfway to the summit, take a moment to respectfully pause at the Killing Caves of Phnom Sampeau. Pay homage at the glass-walled memorial, which houses the skeletal remains of victims brutally killed and then discarded into the cave by the Khmer Rouge. Afterwards, you can spending some time exploring the complex atop the mountain until dusk. As the sun sets, return to the mountain’s base and marvel at the mesmerizing scene of bats pouring from a cave to begin their nightly hunt. Make sure your camera is fully charged all day long, as this is a moment you won’t want to miss.

Day 6: Battambang - Phnom Penh

Morning:
We’ll have a 5-hour car journey to Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. While it may seem lengthy, you’ll find excitement in our stops at age-old craft villages, offering insights into the country’s rich culture. Our first destination is Andong Russei Village in Kampong Chhnang, renowned for its pottery craft dating back over 1,500 years. Nearly every household in the village is involved in ceramics, showcasing pottery of various shapes and patterns. Remember to greet the locals with a smile and say ‘suosdei’ or ‘joom reab sou’. These warm-hearted villagers are always ready to welcome and teach you about traditional clay pot-making by hand. Later, we’ll visit a bustling fish market to witness the freshest catches of the day before enjoying lunch at a nearby local restaurant.

Afternoon:
Continue to Pol Toch Village in Kandal province, renowned for its skilled silversmiths who create exquisite silverware and jewelry. You can pick up some unique souvenirs to take back home. Upon arriving in Phnom Penh, you’ll have the rest of the day to explore the city or simply relax at your leisure.

Day 7: Phnom Penh - Toul Sleng Museum

Morning:
We’ll escape the bustling streets of Phnom Penh, and venture to Koh Dach. Situated in the serene heart of the Mekong River, this island offers an authentic glimpse into Cambodian life at its purest. Embarking from downtown Phnom Penh to Koh Dach Island swiftly unveils a transformation in scenery – from the vibrant cityscape to the tranquil embrace of rural life wirh verdant farms, rustic wooden houses, and quaint pagodas dotting the landscape. Renowned as the Silk Village with a hub for traditional Cambodian crafts, including silk weaving, pottery, dyeing, and wood carving, Koh Dach promises a delightful immersion into local artistry. You can experience the joy of silk spinning or acquire exquisite fabrics directly from the artisans themselves.

Afternoon:
Get ready in formal attire because we’re heading to the “Killing Fields” of Choeng Ek and Tuol Sleng Museum (formerly the S-21 prison). These places resemble the pages of a tragic history book, documenting the darkest chapter of Cambodia under the dictatorship of Khmer Rouge. Take a moment to pay tribute to the thousands of Cambodian who were detained and subjected to torture at S-21 before being sent to the extermination camp. Later, if there’s time, we can explore Toul Tumpong Market for some shopping.

Day 8: Phnom Penh – Mondulkiri

Morning:
We’ll embark on a road trip to Mondulkiri, a must-visit destination for travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience. On our way, we’ll stop at Phnom Pros and Phnom Srei, known as the men’s and women’s mountains. These peaks offer breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Next, we’ll visit Wat Hanchey, an ancient temple from the 8th century. This significant religious center from the Chenla period offers some of the best views over the Mekong River in Cambodia.

Afternoon:
Our journey continues with a visit to a rubber plantation in Memot district, where we’ll learn about the local production of this essential resource. Finally, we’ll arrive in Mondulkiri, Cambodia’s largest yet most sparsely populated province. After checking into our hotel, you’ll have the rest of the day to relax and enjoy the serene surroundings of this charming province.

Day 9: Mondulkiri - Elephant Sanctuary

Morning:
Despite the alarming rate at which Cambodia is losing its forests, Mondulkiri is home to several large wildlife sanctuaries, preserving both its natural inhabitants and the crucial “lungs” of nature. Today, we’ll visit the Mondulkiri Project, a sanctuary where you can get up close and personal with one of the planet’s most incredible creatures: elephants! These elephants, previously captive and saved from logging or riding, are now habituated to humans. Have you ever wondered what it feels like to walk alongside an elephant in a protected forest? You’ll have the opportunity to feed them and create a special bond. Take a break in a jungle lodge, swaying on a hammock, surrounded by the serene beauty of the forest.

Afternoon:
We’ll take a refreshing walk to a stunning waterfall where we can swim and have fun washing the elephants—a one-of-a-kind experience you’ll never forget! Unlike commercial places that exploit elephants for profit, here you will truly feel the happiness of these gentle giants enjoying their freedom. Afterwards, saying goodbye to the elephants, we’ll head back to the center of Mondulkiri.

Day 10: Mondulkiri - Bousra Waterfalls

Morning:
We embark on a 50km journey from the main town to visit one of the region’s most breathtaking natural sites: Bousra Waterfalls. The falls cascade in two magnificent stages, the top cascade is about 10 meters high and 15 meters wide, while the bottom cascade reaches 20 meters high and 20 meters wide. There are numerous freshwater pools perfect for a refreshing dip during the hot summer months. Our next stop is a local coffee plantation, where you’ll learn about the production process of this beloved beverage. Did you know that plantations in northeastern Cambodia are struggling to keep up with the increasing demand for their delicious beans? You can also try a fresh cup of coffee made from the very beans grown on-site.

Afternoon:
On our way back to the main town, we’ll visit the Sen Monorom Waterfall, followed by a trip to the beautiful temple of Wat Phnom Doh Kromom, where you can witness a magical sunset. Conclude the day at Samot Cheur, also known as the “Ocean of Trees.” This stunning location provides breathtaking views of the emerald green forests that blanket the surrounding hills.

Day 11: Stung Treng

Say goodbye to the easternmost province of Cambodia as we embark on a ride to the charming city of Stung Treng, located near the Lao border. Did you know that Stung Treng was once called Satung Teng, named after a Laotian monk who founded the place? This journey will offer you the chance to admire the scenic beauty of Cambodia’s countryside, passing through rural villages and lush green landscapes. Along the way, your experienced guide will share fascinating insights about the history and culture of the region.

Upon arrival in Stung Treng, you’ll be transferred to your hotel where you can settle in and unwind. Alternatively, explore the local area and take in its unique sights and sounds.

Day 12: Stung Treng - Mekong River boat trip

Morning:
We’ll start our day with a scenic 1-hour drive north to the Laos border, where we’ll board a boat and venture onto the mighty Mekong River. Upon arrival, we’ll disembark to get an up-close view of the area on waters. Here, you’ll also have the opportunity to visit a nearby fishing village and learn about traditional medicines still used by the local people. Next, we’ll head to the southern tip of Khone Phapheng, home to the famous Laotian waterfalls and the 4,000 islands area, also known as Si Phan Don. You’ll explore an old French ferry port and train tracks used during the Indochina War.

Afternoon:
Our adventure continues as we kayak through the “flooded forest” and Ramsar Wetlands, home to a variety of bird species. As you paddle through the tranquil waters, you’ll see trees emerging from the water and small islands scattered throughout the area. After kayaking, we’ll return to the longtail boat and make our way back to the car, before heading back to Stung Treng for some well-deserved rest and relaxation.

Day 13: Kratie - River Dolphins Watching

Morning:
Wake up early today because we are heading to Kratie, a charming town on the banks of the mighty Mekong River. On our way, we’ll stop at Prek Kampi to take a boat ride and try to spot the rare Mekong River Dolphins, also known as Mekong Irrawaddy Dolphins. Did you know these dolphins are found only in Asian coastal regions? There are fewer than 100 dolphins in Kratie, and local initiatives work tirelessly to protect them. They are hard to spot since they mostly stay submerged, surfacing for only a few seconds to breathe. That’s why: always keep your camera ready and your eyes peeled for the playful dolphins. If you don’t see one, don’t be disheartened; the daily life of locals along the riverbanks is equally impressive and worth capturing.

Afternoon:
Upon arrival in Kratie, you’ll notice that life here, as in many Cambodian towns, centers around the riverfront. The area is adorned with charming, albeit slightly worn, French colonial buildings clustered around the port. As evening falls, the riverfront lights up with some of the most breathtaking Mekong sunsets you’ll ever see.

Day 14: Phnom Penh

Morning:
Today, we set out for Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. Along the way, we’ll explore Chlong village, a charming spot on the Mekong River. This village is celebrated for its exquisite blend of traditional Khmer and Colonial architecture, skillfully preserved through the years. Did you know Chlong is home to a rare wooden house with 100 columns? This 19th-century gem is a evidence to the area’s rich history.

Afternoon:
Once we reach Phnom Penh, the day is yours to savor. Formerly known as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’, Phnom Penh offers a captivating mix of history and culture. From its sacred Khmer temples and saffron-robed monks to the lingering French colonial elegance, the city is a feast for the senses. Don’t miss out on the chance to indulge in the city’s lively Cambodian food scene, which is as diverse as it is delicious.

Day 15: Phnom Penh – Departure
