Independence Monument in Phnom Penh

Independence Monument is a wonderful structures built in authentic Khmer style of architecture in honor of Cambodia’s liberation from France in 1953. It is a famous tourist attraction not only for locals but also for foreign tourists.

In 1958, Independence Monument’s construction had began in the central square and completed at the end of 1962. The monument is located at the intersection of Sihanouk and Norodom street in Phnom Penh. It was built by an Cambodian architect – Vann Molyvann, featureing ancient Khmer traditional architecture. It has shape of a blooming lotus which according to Cambodian people represents the purity and awakening.

Structure

The Independence Monument is located in the heart of Phnom Penh. It is a place to honos the soldiers who died for the country’s independence and freedom and to recall the memories of the war. The monument is designed in a form of stupa, large and tall, simulating the architecture of Angkor Wat and famous historical sites of Cambodia. Its roof looks like a lotus, one of the typical images appearing in almost Cambodia’s art works.

The Independence Monument is a resting place that offers a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere for visitors during the day. Although not allowed to visit the inside, but the shady campus will also help visitors avoid the sun. The Independent uses purple as the main color. Below is a modern fountain, lighting by night, making this fountain more sparkling.

Independence Monument is a venue for important national holidays of Cambodia such as Independence Day, Constitution Day… If tourists visit Phnom Penh on the occasion of July 1 or September 24, they will have the opportunity to joing with the busy flow of people and see how the monument is decorated on the important days.
